Six centuries ago, they came across the Pacific, the first of the great canoes. They were searching for a new land, somewhere in the vast Southern Ocean. After many months at sea on an incredible journey guided by the stars, the weary travelers hauled their tribal canoes on to the sand.
They had found Aotearoa – the land of the long white cloud. These were the mighty Maori people from Polynesia. The first Europeans arrived in 1642 when the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman thought he had found the great Southern continent, which did not exist. So he sailed on pass without landing. But he named this mountainous land after Zealand in Holland. Today’s explorers cross the Pacific in 12 hours with no problems in landing as they fly in for their New Zealand experience.
